Latest Frogwings
by Paul Robicheau
Boston Globe, Boston, MA
Feb 12th, 1999

Frogwings, a jam-oriented group drawn from members of the Allman Brothers Band and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, was at Lupo's in Providence Sunday in its first show with a new incarnation. Slide guitarist Derek Trucks (whose own band opened) and Jimmy Herring led the charge with searing guitar interplay over the taut Allmans trio of drummer Butch Trucks (Derek's uncle), percussionist Marc Quiñones, and bassist Oteil Burbridge. The new spar was Blues Traveler's John Popper, whose harp leads and vocals weren't up to the fervor of his Traveler gigs, but gave Frogwings new promise on several Allmans/Traveler-style originals and an encore of Allmans favorite "Hot 'Lanta." The group is at Pearl Street in Northampton tomorrow. (Item contributed by Globe correspondent Paul Robicheau).
