Blues Traveler leader John Popper's Thursday (July 1) hospitalization has forced the band to cancel its annual July 4th weekend shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo.

The band, which has played July 4 shows at Red Rocks for the past seven years, was scheduled to play two shows on July 3 and 4 with openers Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise.

Popper checked into a West Coast hospital on Thursday to undergo precautionary tests after experiencing chest pains in recent months. Under doctors' advice, Popper will remain in the hospital to have his condition monitored.

While the band expressed its regret at having to cancel the shows in a statement on Thursday, concerned fans should note that Popper's hospitalization is only a precautionary measure. Ticket holders should keep their tickets for the next week, until further information is announced. Meanwhile, Popper's solo debut is still scheduled for a Sept. 7 release on A&M/Interscope.
