|As soon as drummer Brendan Hill posted a suggestion in his
Road Diary area on the new bluestraveler.com, the responses
came pouring in. Hill had solicited ideas for old songs and
cover tunes for the band to work on, and between messages to
the bulletin board and emails to the band, the requests
ranged from recent pop to classic rock. At their Saturday
show in Clifton Park, the band broke into a work-in-progress
cover of the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is
Magic"; Sunday's show reportedly repeated the tune along
with the Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie", which the band
had not played since a May 1990 Spinning Traveler show.
Bassist Tad Kinchla mentioned in a post-show conversation
that another cover tune in the running was the Rolling
Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil".
In a separate story, Dave Morris, the former bandleader of
Ben Wilson's previous band, Big Dave and the Ultrasonics,
announced to black-cat list member Dave Herrald that the two
would be reuniting to support a local roots rock trio.
Following is an excerpt from Morris' email to Herrald:
Since the breakup of our band, Big Dave and the
Ultrasonics, a year ago, I've hardly played at all. [...]
I loved playing with Ben, though, so he and I will be
doing these two gigs just for fun. We'll be sitting in
with a roots rock trio called George Bedard and the
Kingpins. Bedard is a great swing, blues and rockabilly
guitarist. Ben and I will just be along for the ride, and
we'll be playing mostly roots music, some covers, and
whatever George wants to throw at us. Should be a blast.
Here's the gig info:
Friday, 12/15 Erie, PA The Docksider (814) 454-9700
Saturday, 12/16 Pittsburgh, PA Moondog's (412) 828-2040
[...] Anyone can email me if
they'd like more info. By the way, Ben and I recorded
three discs with Big Dave and the Ultrasonics. The first
two can be tough to find (though people can buy [them]
directly from me ;), but the last one (self-titled) is
still in print, and it has some of Ben's best playing on
it. You can find out more about it by checking out our
label's website [at] www.burnsiderecords.com.
Thanks for the email, and we'll hope to see you next
