09-04-2001Spinning Spiraling Machine resurrected; Winners of new survey announced; More tour dates trickle in

After winning Rick Duro's famed Chant Poll in early 1999, the guess was that the band would decide to grace one of its only two 1999 gigs with the lost classic, Spinning Spiraling Machine. The song that had last seen the light of day on November 24th, 1996 had garnered 60 out of 700 points, winning by 5 over Bagheera. But the song was not to be, due to the unfortunate and tragic events of the summer. Upon entering the Cape Cod Melody tent last Tuesday, Brendan Hill saw the rotating stage and could not resist the urge to put the song into the setlist, despite not having the song on the band's play list. New members Ben and Tad learned the song during sound check, and then a little under an hour into the show, Spinning Spiraling Machine made its comeback.

In a somewhat ironic twist, Spinning Spiraling Machine was NOT the winner of the write-in votes for BluesTraveler.Net's latest survey. Taking the prize in the main voting were I Have My Moments, with 7.4% of the voets, The Gunfighter, with 6% of the votes, and Brother John, with 5.4% of the votes, narrowly defeating Love Of My Life at 5.2%. Other songs over 4% included Mountain Cry, Sweet Pain and the famous Traveler Suite. Winning the write-in section was Conquer Me, in a minor upset. Alone, Sweet Talking Hippie and Outta My Hands all tied for second, while Lucky Lack and Spinning Spiraling Machine finished in a tie for third. All results have been forwarded to the band and once the laggards have been eliminated, they will likely be put to a re-vote before they see action in concert again.

The latest word on concerts is that they will be running through October 16th, although the 10/6 - 10/16 leg has yet to be announced. Among the confirmed gigs announced over the last week are shows in Charlotte, NC, Washington, DC, Richmond, VA, Atlanta, GA and Tucson, AZ. With the exception of the Charlotte gig, these appear to be more headlining shows rather than festival appearances. Unconfirmed dates at this point include a 9/28 show at Wake Forest University, a 10/5 gig at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY and and private corporate show on 10/3 that accounts for the break between 9/30 and 10/5. LiveDaily.com also listed a 9/26 show in Myrtle Beach, SC, but nothing else has substantiated this rumor as of yet.
