The first migration of the Great American H.O.R.D.E. went in two stages,
North and South. The first leg began at the Cumberland County Civic
Center in Portland, Maine - to this day the only H.O.R.D.E. show in
Portland proper and one of the few in a completely enclosed venue. It
was at this show that the H.O.R.D.E. chant originated. From there, the
tour swung out west to Syracuse, down to New Jersey, and the first leg
culminated with a show at Wantagh's Jones Beach Amphitheater,
highlighted by a guest appearance by the New York Scottish Fife and
Drum Corps.
After a three-week break to tour with the Allman Brothers Band, Blues
Traveler returned to take the H.O.R.D.E. Festival to the southern
crowds, and in the words of a vendor who was on that very first tour,
"get a load of that travel schedule". The band had opened for the
Allmans in Washington on August 1st, then drove across the country for
a New York City benefit concert on the 5th. The very next day, the
traveling festival resumed - in Alabama. The next three days proved
equally hectic, as H.O.R.D.E. visited Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; and
Columbia, MD.
