12-21-2003First confirmed show of 2004 announced; John sits in with The Mother Truckers

The first official show of 2004 has been announced thanks to blackcat list member Dave Gaylinn. On March 14th, 2004, the band has been scheduled to play a post-game concert at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The game, which begins at noon, will be between the Grand Rapids Rampage and the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League. Individual tickets can be purchased through tickets.com for the game and concert. The price of the ticket will include the game and general admission seating for the concert; there are no concert-only tickets. For more information, visit the web site for the Grand Rapids Rampage.

In a post to the bluestraveler.com message board it was mentioned that in addition to his various gigs in the Bay area, John Popper was out on the town on Friday night, December 12th. According to attendees, John showed up near the end of the set by local "irreverent, mildly offensive country band" The Mother Truckers at the 4th Street Tavern in San Rafael and played with them for the final 25 minutes or so. John lent his harp to "Merry Christmas Baby", "Bright Lights, Big City" and "Love Me Like A Man". As it turns out, John's appearance was actually a result of his then-upcoming guest spot with The Dead; Justin Kreutzmann, son of Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, is currently working with the Bay Area-based Mother Truckers on a video project and managed to persuade John to stop by and jam while he was in the area. A recording was made of the entire show and it should be entering circulation soon, so keep your ears open!
